Its large slate of exclusive titles, such
as Halo 3, and its solid developer tools make the
Xbox 360 a formidable competitor for the foreseeable
future.
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo surprised the world with the runaway success
of its innovative Nintendo Wii console. Nintendo
designed the console with the belief that to grow
the game market, it needed to appeal to a broader
demographic. The wireless motion- sensitive controllers
stressed more player interaction and captured
the world??™s imagination. The console was the musthave
item of the Christmas 2006 season. As of August
2007, sales exceeded nine million units worldwide.
Sony PlayStation 3
The PlayStation 3 debuted in November 2006 to great
fanfare. Sales of the $600 machine, however, were
much lower than expected a er launch due to a combination
of two factors: lack of games and a high price
point. The console is strategically important to Sony as
a corporation because it represents a gaming platform,
a Blu-ray DVD player, and a Sony Internet connected
device in the living room. The company has announced
both price cuts and the release of over 300 games
to compete with its rivals in the console business:
Microso and Nintendo.
